I may also dedicate an old iPad Mini as a remote. However, it is difficult for my wife and kid which is why I need a remote with a screen (enter the Ultimate Home). I haven't needed the screen or the app at all once I finished programming the keys. My favorite feature is that each button can be assigned two functions, short-press and long-press. While the app can be a bit sluggish (compounded by your mobile device if it is an older model) it can do almost everything I desire.Īs long as you don't mind programming the functionality via an app or PC, everything can be done from the remote of any Hub-bundled remote. I currently have the 900 (which replaced a 1100 which died from being dropped too may times) and a couple of 650s in addition to the Companion. I've been using Harmony Remotes since their inception. While I like the Elite button placement much better, I decided to just deal with the Ultimate to save $$. I have been experimenting with the Hub via the Harmony Companion bundle. I decided to pull the trigger on the Harmony Ultimate Home deal from Best Buy. So like you I am still on the lookout for a good replacement/upgrade. the simple remote does not have a backlight or a Help button This is a basic remote with no touch screen for common activities, along with a smartphone app that gives touchscreen access for less frequently used commands. Also, if you want to just adjust the volume you need to get the smartphone out of sleep mode, so not as convenient as a dedicated remote.Ī compromise might be the Harmony Home Control. The obvious limitation is other people who use the AV facilities would also need to have equivalently configured smartphones. There are emerging smartphone apps that look promising but they either do not have all the capabilities of a Harmony or the huge database of device codes. Any competitive products seems to be just as expensive. I am still using my HO and the only replacement/upgrade considered is the Harmony Elite, but have not yet justified the steep price. There are a few quirks with it that are likely related to the Harmony line and not just the HO. The HO has always been a bit sluggish but is functionally solid.
